Piercing After Care Every piercing heals at a different rate and swelling differs from person to person. Any concerns should be taken back to your piercer to be checked out. *Packaged sterile saline solution with no additives (read label) is the best option if not available a non-iodized sea salt mixture: Dissolve ¼ teaspoon of non-iodized (iodine free) sea salt into one cup (8oz) of warm distilled or bottled water. A stronger mixture is not better; a saline solution that is too strong can irritate the piercing and dry it out. All you need to do is soak it twice a day. *If jewelry ever feels tight you must come back in to switch to something longer because your piercing will not heal properly when the jewelry is tight. Avoid bodily fluids around fresh piercing. *What to expect; initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, or bruising. *During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of whiteish-yellowish fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals. *Once healed: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing; do not force it. *If you fail to include cleaning you piercing as part of your daily hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may accumulate. *A piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. This is because tissue heals from the outside in, and although it feels fine, the interior remains fragile. *Be patient and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period. Even healed piercings can shrink or close in minutes after having been there for years! This varies from person to person; if you like your piercing keep jewelry in- do not leave it empty. *Avoid submerging the piercing in unhygienic bodies of water such as lakes, pools, hot tubs, baths etc. Avoid heavy exercise routines until your body is ready. Try to stay away from dusty/dirty activities such as gardening, exposure to dirt and bacteria can increase the risk of infection. If unavoidable, protect your piercing using a waterproof wound- sealant bandage. These are available at most drugstores. (Liquid band aid) *Avoid all beauty and personal products on or around the piercing including cosmetics, lotions, and sprays, etc. *Don't hang charms or any object from your jewelry until the piercing is fully healed. Avoid rough play and be mindful; be careful with clothing that can irritate or tug on your new piercing. Be mindful around children and pets do not let them touch! Suspect your piercing is infected? Immediately contact your piercer for a check-up or see your doctor as soon as you can. Some discomfort and swelling are normal. Signs of infection include but are not limited to redness swelling, tenderness of procedure sight. Red streaks stemming from procedure sight towards heart, elevated body temperature or purulent drainage from sight. Pus will have a foul-smelling odor.
